Ch 5 Knowledge
“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge”.
Remember the old saying “girls go to college to get more knowledge; boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider”? That kind of knowledge is not what is being mentioned in this portion of our scripture. Worldly knowledge or the knowledge we gain through going to school is good and necessary to strive for and obtain. It is not, however, the only knowledge we are commanded to pursue.
The knowledge being discussed in the passage is a knowledge of God. Peter is commanding us to grow closer to God. To pursue God so desperately that we are gaining knowledge of Him in every instance of our life.
Growing in the knowledge of God comes from reading the Bible. Shocker Sunday school answer, right? Knowledge of God is also shouted all throughout creation. Honestly, that is a reason I love the outdoors. I have the privilege of witnessing God’s creation. Even if it is tainted by sin, it is still awe-inspiring and beautiful.
Knowledge of God can also come through personal experiences. Through our struggles in difficult or impossible times, God reveals himself to us. In our times of praise, worship, and prayer, God will speak to us.
When this knowledge of God is received through a personal experience, you must insure it lines up with the Word of God. God never contradicts Himself, so if the knowledge of God you just gained by way of personal experience is at odds with the Bible, something is wrong and it’s not the Bible.
