Do real men have beards? Do all real men get their hands dirty? Does a real man act a certain way?
What does it mean to be “a man”?
Personally, I know men without facial hair. Men that have influenced my life in great ways and have taught me what it means to be a man, but they don’t typically get their hands dirty.
I’ve met men, real manly men that each has a different personality, job, and lifestyle.
Yet, all seem to have traits in common.
110%-er (One hundred ten percenter)
Over the few short years I have been on this earth I have noticed, a real man will give all he has and then some. First to God then his family and friends second and his work third.
This has been modeled to me by many men in my life.
My Pawpa is a man that has modeled this concept well for me.
He taught me to work hard at a young age. This was not child abuse, despite what some might claim today. Believe it or not, I actually survived without trauma; in my opinion it was good for me.
From an early age he taught me what hard work was by demonstrating it as well as teaching me in the school of OJT (On the Job Training), as he calls it.
My first “job” was picking up rocks in the freshly plowed field behind his house. As I aged, my jobs grew in difficulty and responsibility.
In every activity my Pawpa participates in he gives 110%. From the amazing wooden bowls he turns on the lathe, spending time with and loving his family and selflessly giving to people in need of help.
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one get the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize” – 1 Corinthians 9:24
He has strived to steer me in the right direction to become a real man. I am thankful that he has been an extraordinary example of running to win the prize.
