A phrase that was common in recent history but watch the news and media today and you won’t hear that phrase.
You won’t even get the sense that a majority of Americans are proud to be American.
I was sitting in my first grade teachers classroom when I heard the news of 911.
I didn’t fully understand what was happening at the time but I do remember the unity that came as a result of the United States being attacked.
I remember people find common ground despite having major differences. People of all races, ages, and backgrounds came together to stand united.
Now look at us. We are more divided than we ever have been in recent history.
A majority of the “issues” are only issues for political reasons. Our politicians, the men and women WE elect to represent us bicker and play the “blame game” instead of doing their jobs.
In the end we become more divided. By race, by sex, by age, by political party, by anyway possible.
How can we become united despite our differences. That’s what made America great.
America is the land of opportunity because of our diversity. That doesn’t mean we should focus on all our differences. We should learn how each other’s differences can make us better as a country.
The last time we were “united” it took a disaster. A horrific tragedy had to happen in order for people to have empathy for one another.
How ridiculous. It should not take a tragedy to bring us all together. Especially if you consider yourself a Christian.
Charles Spurgeon once stated, “And as we each draw nearer to Jesus, we will also each draw nearer to each other. This is His heart for us. Unity makes Him smile. Disunity dishonors His Sacrifice. The more near we are to Jesus, the more near we ought to be to one another. To look at Jesus is to find the strength to serve Him, and to serve others.
Our nation claims to be a Christian nation, yet disunity runs ramped in our communities.
Jesus himself said the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind. The second is to love your neighbor as yourself.
Let’s get back to being proudly American. It starts with loving God and loving people, who are made in His image.
I am proud to be an American. Are you?
