We putted along on the tractor around the house and barns. She swatted away my hand each time I reached for the steering wheel to correct our trajectory.
Kailey, my daughter is not old enough or even big enough to drive the tractor on her own. Still she believed she was driving the tractor all by herself, while sitting on my lap.
Often, we treat God in this manner. We want and need Him close to us. Being close to God brings blessings and comfort similar to Kailey being close to me, her earthly father.
Yet, we don’t want God driving our lives. We want His hands off the steering wheel.
We don’t think its fair that the Creator of the Universe should give us a set of rules to live by. No matter how simple that set of rules is to follow.
I said simple, not easy.
We want the freedom to make our own decisions but we want God in the passenger seat to fix our messes when they inevitably come.
We want the blessing of God on our lives, just not the restrictions that the blessing requires.
You see, we want, we want, we want but we don’t stop to ask what does God want?
God desires to be close to us.
So close that He is in EVERY SINGLE DETAIL of our lives.
God doesn’t want to be the backseat driver. Ordering us to stop and go, turn right, turn left, back up, slow down, and speed up.
He desires for us to be in such a close relationship with Him that we desire to go where He wants us to.
