Are you even listening?

Hello?

Hey!

HELLO!!

Did you hear a word I just said? Are you even listening to me?

Questions I have heard roll off my wife’s lips as a young married man, more than once.

At times easily distracted, I have a hard time focusing on the thing my wife is telling me.

Other times I have the answer. “I know” what she is searching for so I interject my two cents prematurely.

News flash she typically doesn’t want me to solve her problems. She just wants me to hear what she has to say.

I look around our culture today and notice I’m not the only one with a listening problem.

With endless ways to get our own voices heard, social media, podcasts, and blogging to name a few, we have forgotten what it means to listen.

Truly listen.

On social media we get in stupid arguments about politics.

Instead of listening to the other side we just shout our opinions louder.

We make fun of them. We use degrading names. We do anything and everything except listen.

Listening, truly listening takes strength and courage.

Lets transfer this over to our spiritual lives.

Do we to listen to God?

Or do we treat Him like a genie in a bottle? Shout out our wishes and then stand there impatiently waiting for Him to fulfill those wishes.

When was the last time we took time to listen to God?

Truly listened to what He has to say to us?

This can be done by reading what He has already said in scripture.

It can also be done through another person. Of course God can speak directly to you.

Audibly, silently, that still small voice pulling you in a certain direction, and even through nature.

God’s not silent like we often believe him to be.

He is speaking, but are we listening?
